* - The wildcard is used with a search word that has different spellings or endings.
volunt* -- will find volunteer, volunteering, volunteerism; fund* retrieves fund, funds, fundraising, etc.

“ ” - Quotation marks around a phrase will find that exact order of words in an item description.
“program planning” OR "Statistics on volunteering"

! - the NOT symbol removes a common word you do not want.
Charities ! tax -- retrieves items with charities but NOT tax (greater precision)

/ - The OR symbol substitutes one like term for another.
non profit / nonprofit -- retrieves items with EITHER term (broadens results)

> < - the date searches can limit further [>, <, =]
>2000 -- retrieves everything published after 2000 (greater than 2000)
