Volunteerism is the cornerstone of charitable and nonprofit sector in Canada.  Alternatively known as “the Voluntary Sector”, just over half of Canada’s 160,000 nonprofit organizations are operated solely through volunteer labour and every registered charitable organization is governed by voluntary boards (Statistics Canada, 2004).
