Search tips

These advanced search tips will help you refine your Google search. Note : these tips work with ANY Google search engine, not just ours!  For more, see Google search basics : basic search help.

• Limit search to a country or region with the ‘+’ in front of the region name e.g. ‘volunteer centres +Canada’
• Search synonyms with the  ' ~ ' :  ' ~charity ' will also return results with 'nonprofit', 'not-for-profit', 'charitable', etc. 
• Exclude words or phrases with the  ' - '  : 'donors -blood' will exclude results about blood donors from your search.
• Search a phrase or series of words with quotations: e.g “environmental disasters” funding +Canada
• Search for file types, such as pdf or ppt, with ' filetype: pdf ' in your search string.
• The ' * ' can be used to substitute for any of several words which might accurately complete the phrase you are searching for; Google will automatically search for all of them.
